Strawberry harvest, starting in the Yayladağı district of Hatay, located in the southernmost part of Turkey, continues under challenging conditions in the scorching heat reaching 40 degrees. To avoid being affected by the high temperatures, farmers start harvesting with the first light of the day and consume liters of water to cool off. With the arrival of the summer season in Hatay, where the wounds of the earthquake are healing, the harvest of many fruits has begun. The harvest of Yayladağı strawberries, grown in fertile lands, continues under the tough conditions of the hot weather exceeding 40 degrees. In the region, which is the southernmost part of Turkey and experiences heat waves from Africa, farmers rush to the fields with the first light of the day for harvesting. Yayladağı strawberries, exported to many provinces in Turkey, as well as to Russia and Georgia, leaving a delightful taste in the mouths, find buyers at 45 TL per field. Citizens continuing the harvest in the hot weather consume liters of water to cool off.
“We consume more than 10 liters of water to drink and cool off” Mentioning that he experienced nosebleeds due to the hot weather and consumed more than 10 liters of water to cool off, Mehmet Kaya said, “The weather in Hatay is very hot, reaching 40 degrees. We consume more than 10 liters of water to drink and cool off. I am preparing for the university entrance exam and also helping my father. We are harvesting strawberries, which is very difficult in the heat. I try to cool off by pouring water over my head, drinking cold water, and eating ice cream. I also have nosebleeds in the heat, it causes troubles” he said.
“Our strawberries are sold domestically in Ankara, Izmir, Bursa, Istanbul, as well as in Russia and Georgia” Farmer Ahmet Kaya, stating that the famous Yayladağı strawberries are exported to Russia and Georgia and the product finds buyers at 45 TL per field, said, “Our famous Yayladağı strawberries have mobilized our people for the harvest. We hope our strawberries are sold at the best prices. Our harvest is abundant. Our strawberries are around 100 TL in supermarkets, but if they go directly from the producer to the consumer, both the consumer and we would benefit more. Currently, the price in the field is 45 TL, we are not satisfied with the price, to be honest. Due to the heat, we have to enter the field at 5:30. Our strawberries are sold domestically in Ankara, Izmir, Bursa, Istanbul, as well as in Russia and Georgia” he said.
