The couple Bora and Gül Taştan, who live in Sivas, achieved success at the Kickboxing World Cup and International Mediterranean Championship held in Istanbul between May 15-19. The saying ‘Behind every successful man, there is a woman’ turned around as Gül Taştan won the gold medal and her husband won the bronze medal.
The couple Bora and Gül Taştan, living in Sivas, started practicing kickboxing about 2 years ago to relieve stress and set an example for their children. After their research, they met with Muay Thai and Kickboxing Trainer Ekrem Aris, and both started doing sports and relieving the stress of the day. The couple participated in the Kickboxing World Cup and International Mediterranean Championship held in Istanbul between May 15-19, where 44 countries participated, and achieved success. Gül Taştan, competing in the Veterans category, became the champion while her husband Bora Taştan ranked third. With this achievement, the saying ‘Behind every successful man, there is a woman’ literally turned around.
‘Behind every successful woman, there is a man too’
Gül Taştan, who stated that they started this sport as an activity about two years ago, said, ‘I became first in the World Cup. Putting effort and achieving success there really makes a person very happy. It’s nice to see that we got the return of the efforts we put in there. I always believed in myself from the beginning. I always thought I would go there and become the first. I never even thought I would come second. Because I always imagined myself receiving the first place medal on that podium, in the end, it happened as I expected. My husband received the third prize at the International Mediterranean Championship. He fought very well. He also fought with me from the beginning. We were here five or six days a week without stopping, our training continued. In the end, it was good for us. My husband supported me a lot in this regard. Actually, behind every successful woman, there is a man too,’ she said.
‘We wanted to set an example for families’
Bora Taştan expressed that they wanted to set an example for families by doing this sport with his wife, saying, ‘We started this as a hobby, but it brought us to these positions. In the beginning, when we were calculating how we would do it, we participated in an organization where we achieved a ranking. Our teacher has a great contribution here. He provided us with serious motivation. We started as a hobby, our goal in professionalization was to set an example for our child. Actually, we wanted to set an example for young people and families like us. We participated in the International Mediterranean Championship held in Istanbul between May 15-19. My wife won the first place. I also achieved the third place with a small mishap. We are happy because it was very enjoyable for us to get the return of the effort we put in. It was a very nice environment. We will work again next year to be in better positions. We bring our child here too. We have a goal and purpose to add something to him,’ he said.
‘We represented our province and our country in the best way in those difficult conditions’
Ekrem Aris, stating that they once again proved that age is not a barrier in sports, said, ‘We participated in the World Cup and International Mediterranean Tournament held in Istanbul between May 15-19 with 15 athletes from Sivas. We won eleven medals out of fifteen athletes. It was a big competition. The participation was high. There were over five thousand athletes. We represented our province and our country in the best way in those difficult conditions,’ he said.
