Retired from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), Prof. Dr. Paul Work, gave a lecture at ZBEÜ. Having worked for many years at the prominent universities in the United States, such as the Georgia Institute of Technology, and also served at the United States Geological Survey, Prof. Dr. Paul A. Work delivered a lecture titled ‘Coastal and Port Structures, Protection of Coastlines through Coastal Nourishment’ at the Faculty of Engineering at ZBEÜ. Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Şenol Hakan Kutoğlu and Prof. Dr. Servet Karasu, the Department Chair of Civil Engineering Prof. Dr. Serdar Ulubeyli, and academic staff from the Civil Engineering Department along with students attended the lecture where Prof. Dr. Paul A. Work presented his research, studies, and findings conducted over the years. Prof. Paul A. Work highlighted that the eastern coast of the USA is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, while the western coast is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, emphasizing that coastal erosion caused by oceanic effects threatens coastlines and settlement areas. He also discussed the efforts to prevent erosion in coastal cities and protect shorelines through coastal nourishment, elaborating on the coastal protection studies conducted, the results obtained, and the necessary future measures. Mentioning that the Black Sea coasts face similar problems, Work stated that he has collaborated with ZBEÜ Rector Prof. Dr. İsmail Hakkı Özölçer and Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Servet Karasu on related issues in Turkey. Prof. Work expressed his great pleasure in the possibility of future joint research and thanked all participants for their attendance. The lecture, which saw high attendance, concluded with Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Şenol Hakan Kutoğlu thanking Prof. Dr. Paul A. Work.
