The theater play titled ‘Towards the Republic,’ prepared within the scope of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Republic of Turkey by the Ministry of National Education, met with the audience at Beşiktaş Tüpraş Stadium. The play, which tells the heroic story of the national struggle and the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, with a cast of 400 people, was performed in Istanbul.
The theater play ‘Towards the Republic,’ prepared by the Ministry of National Education and staged a total of 40 times in 30 different cities, meeting approximately 40,000 teachers, students, and spectators, was this time staged at Beşiktaş Tüpraş Stadium. The performance, sponsored by Vakıfbank to contribute to the strengthening of social unity in the country, took place with the participation of the Minister of National Education, Yusuf Tekin.
Speaking after the play, Minister Tekin said, ‘There are no words to say. This is my 5th or 6th viewing. It was a play that we have been brainstorming for about 4 and a half years. I am 100% sure that this play will leave a mark in the world, in Turkish theater history, and also in Turkish political life. I sincerely thank everyone who contributed.’
Minister Tekin also mentioned the sacrifices made by the actors for this play, thanking them for their dedication. He expressed his gratitude to Vakıfbank’s General Manager Abdi Serdar Üstünsalih for providing the opportunity. After his speech, Minister Tekin presented plaques to the organizer Murat Aksu and Vakıfbank Deputy General Manager Ferkan Merdan.
The play, which portrays the epic story of the National Struggle initiated by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his comrades with the strong support of the Turkish nation, and the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, features original music composed by Selim Atakan. The project consultancy is undertaken by İbrahim Sarıtaş, and the leading roles are shared by Serdar Yeğin, Gülen Karaman, Erhan Yazıcıoğlu, Ahmet Yenilmez, Zuhal Yalçın, Şebnem Özinal, Ziya Kürküt, Sefa Zengin, Bora Severcan, Yiğit Yapıcı, and Volkan Severcan.
The play begins with a teacher narrating the process of the declaration of the republic to his 10-year-old student Ali. It then continues with the establishment of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey in Ankara by Mustafa Kemal Pasha and his comrades, depicting how the national heroes, together with the Turkish nation, fought until their last drop of blood to win the War of Independence and how Mustafa Kemal Atatürk declared the republic.
