The Rector of Kütahya Dumlupınar University, Prof. Dr. Süleyman Kızıltoprak, stated that the most valuable treasure of the Tavşanlı Zeytinoğlu Public Library is a deer skin-bound manuscript dating back to the year 1090 and a beautifully calligraphed handwritten Quran.
Rector Prof. Dr. Süleyman Kızıltoprak mentioned that the Tavşanlı Zeytinoğlu Library is a rich library that houses culturally, historically, and artistically valuable Arabic, Persian, and Ottoman 2,540 manuscripts, along with unique manuscripts carrying examples of traditional Turkish art, and highlighted the significance of the deer skin-bound handwritten Quran dating back to Hijri 483 AD (1090 AD) with a Persian word translation that was brought to light with the contributions of our university.
“Turks have given the greatest value to the Quran as its servants”
Rector Kızıltoprak, stating that “Turks, who won the Battle of Malazgirt in 1071, did not only acquire these lands with sword power. They also possessed knowledge and art. In Turkish Islamic Civilization, when it comes to books, the Quran is of course the first thing that comes to mind, and great importance is attached to the writing, decoration, and organization of these works as a product of infinite respect for it. The Quran in Zeytinoğlu Library is in excellent condition in terms of binding and paper. This work serves as a very valuable title deed proving that Anatolia is the ancient homeland of the Turks. Turks, who won the Battle of Malazgirt in 1071, did not only acquire these lands with sword power. They also possessed knowledge and art. In their hearts, tongues, and hands, there is the Quran. The handwritten manuscript from 1090 is exceptional in terms of its binding, paper quality, and decorations on paper and binding. One of the many evidence showing that Turks expanded from East to West with military, cultural, and artistic power is the Quran in this library. Turks who settled in Anatolia and the Balkans as their homeland gave the greatest value to the Quran as its servants and always kept it in the forefront. This work, which adds value to the Zeytinoğlu Library, is open to the scientific and artistic studies of historians, theologians, linguists, and academics, as well as artists and academics in the fields of binding, calligraphy, and illumination. As these studies are conducted, the contributions of the Library to Turkish-Islamic civilization will continue to increase. These works, written for the libraries of important figures presented to the rulers, viziers, and statesmen of the period, are our cultural heritage that reminds future generations of the greatness of Turkish Islamic civilization and its rich legacy.
