BITLIS (IHA) – The Bitlis Provincial Health Directorate organized a hiking event to the summit of Nemrut Crater Lake, the largest crater lake in Europe, on the occasion of European Obesity Day. In order to draw attention to healthy eating and active living, the Bitlis Provincial Health Directorate organized a hiking event to the summit of Nemrut caldera located in Tatvan district of Bitlis with approximately 50 volunteer healthcare workers. Bitlis Provincial Health Director Uzm. Dr. Mustafa Ekici also participated in the hiking event, where a hike up to the summit of Nemrut caldera at an altitude of 2,250 meters was made to raise awareness on healthy eating and active living. Speaking about the event, Dietician Nurşen Şahin stated, ‘As part of the European Obesity Day activities, we, as the Bitlis Provincial Health Directorate, organized a very meaningful event. Together with our staff, we climbed to Nemrut Mountain, where Europe’s largest crater lake is located. The aim of this event was to draw attention to obesity and emphasize the importance of healthy living. According to the WHO’s European report, 59% of adults in Europe (63% of men and 54% of women) are obese or overweight. Additionally, it is stated that one in three children (29% of boys and 27% of girls) is either overweight or obese. Excessive weight is a leading cause of death in Europe, causing 1.3 million deaths annually. The report mentions that excess weight leads to 13 types of cancer, heart diseases, and type 2 diabetes, and it is likely responsible for at least 200,000 new cancer cases per year in the region, a figure expected to increase in the coming years. This climb to Nemrut Mountain at an altitude of 2,250 meters was carried out to demonstrate the positive effects of physical activity on our health and to remind once again the benefits of being in harmony with nature. The magnificent view and clean air of Nemrut Mountain highlight how important it is for a healthy life. In this regard, I invite everyone to adopt healthy eating habits and engage in regular physical activity. Healthy living is not only an individual responsibility but also a societal one. As the Bitlis Provincial Health Directorate, we will continue our efforts decisively to protect and improve public health. We will do our best together to take a step towards a healthier and happier future. We call on all our citizens to be sensitive about embracing healthy lifestyle habits and making them sustainable.’
