The United Nations Habitat 3rd Regional Urban Summit – Latin America and Turkey Program was organized in Bahçelievler. Speaking at the program, Bahçelievler Mayor Dr. Hakan Bahadır stated, ‘We aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by the year 2030 both institutionally and at the district level. Water is one of the natural resources most affected by climate change worldwide. Only 6% of Turkey’s total water resources are drinkable. According to the United Nations, 470 million people live in water-stressed regions, and this number is expected to increase by 600% by 2025. In Turkey, the per capita water amount is at the level of 1,120 cubic meters in 2023. It is predicted that our country will be listed among the water-stressed countries in the 2040s.’
Under the leadership of UN-Habitat Andean Hub and Bahçelievler Municipality, the United Nations Habitat 3rd Regional Urban Summit – Latin America and Turkey Program was held. The program, held at Bahçelievler Municipality Congress Center, was attended by Bahçelievler Mayor Dr. Hakan Bahadır and foreign municipal authorities. The program aimed to increase collaboration efforts in sustainable energy solutions and solid waste management, pave the way for important decisions, and open the door to partnerships. Additionally, at the United Nations Habitat 3rd Regional Urban Summit, the development of a comprehensive approach that combines energy innovation and waste management among Turkish and Latin American, Andean Region municipalities was encouraged.
