Pediatric Health and Diseases Specialist Dr. Hatice Polat Menekşe, warning parents about ‘slushie’ drinks that attract children’s attention with their colorful appearances, stated that children under the age of 10 should be kept away from such drinks. Informing about Glycerol added to slushie drinks made outside and giving a frozen effect, Dr. Menekşe said, ‘This substance causes symptoms such as headache, vomiting, abdominal pain, low blood sugar, and loss of consciousness in children.’ With the arrival of the summer months, the consumption rates of icy drinks will also increase. Slushie drinks, which are popular due to their colorful appearance and taste, are also popular among children. However, in order to give a slush effect to these drinks, ‘Glycerol’ included with the code E422 is added. Dr. Hatice Polat Menekşe, Pediatric Health and Diseases Specialist at Çamlıca Erdem Hospital, warned about this substance. She emphasized that children under 10 should be kept away from such drinks, stating that there is a warning to manufacturers to use very small amounts of glycerol. However, we do not know how much this can be implemented. Even in very small amounts, it poses a danger to children under 10.’
Families may not always understand the reasons for these symptoms Dr. Menekşe added, ‘These types of drinks were traditionally prepared with sugar, but lately, they are being made using glycerol to be available as a ready-made food. When consumed by young children, it can cause symptoms such as headache, vomiting, abdominal pain, low blood sugar, and loss of consciousness. Families may not always understand the reasons for these symptoms. Therefore, being cautious is important.’
Long-term effects can remain in the child: Cases have been identified Dr. Menekşe highlighted that glycerol consumption is very dangerous for children under 4 years old. She added, ‘For children aged 4-10, only very small amounts should be given. Excessive consumption of these drinks can have serious consequences for children under 4. Unfortunately, in cases of delayed intervention, low blood sugar and loss of consciousness can lead to long-term effects in children. There have been reported cases in children under 4.’ Glycerol is generally used in ready-made food products as a sweetener or preservative, but in most cases, it is in trace amounts that do not cause harm. However, excessive amounts in slushie drinks can be a cause for concern.
Providing recommendations to parents, Dr. Menekşe concluded her words by saying, ‘Do not let your children consume ready-made products. For example, prepare fruit juice yourself. Boxed products can only be consumed at safe intervals.’
