Konyaaltı Municipality in Antalya organized an event titled “Healthy Life Tobacco-Free Life” on May 31st, World No Tobacco Day. During the event, Prof. Dr. Ali İhsan Bozkurt conducted a discussion on the topic of “Ways to Quit Smoking.” Prof. Dr. Bozkurt revealed that in Turkey, 5,500 people lose their lives in traffic accidents annually, stating, ‘We lose 20 times more people due to smoking than in traffic accidents.’
The “Healthy Life Tobacco-Free Life” event organized by Konyaaltı Municipality on May 31st, World No Tobacco Day, received positive feedback.
At the Ahmet Tunç Hall of Konyaaltı Municipality, Prof. Dr. Ali İhsan Bozkurt, during his discussion titled “Ways to Quit Smoking,” made the following statements: ‘Unfortunately, our situation regarding smoking is very bad. We need to do things better. For example, in the UK and Scandinavian countries, the smoking rate has dropped below 10%. But in our country, there is an increase in smoking rates. Decisions to ban smoking have been made in countries like Iceland and Ireland. That will soon be our case. Even smoking one cigarette a day, if done continuously, is very harmful.’
We Lose 100 Thousand People Annually
Prof. Dr. Bozkurt, who stated that 5,500 people lose their lives in traffic accidents annually in Turkey, continued his speech: ‘The number of people who lose their lives due to smoking reaches 100,000. We lose 20 times more people due to smoking than in traffic accidents. We fear traffic accidents, we try to take precautions, but we are not doing anything to quit smoking. According to research, smokers live 15-20 years less than non-smokers.’
The event concluded after a question and answer session.
