During the demolition of a building heavily damaged in the earthquake in Elazığ, it was revealed that some parts of the adjacent building had no walls and had been using a shared wall for years. The thin walls in the building constructed by the same contractor drew attention. The unusual incident in Elazığ took place on Şehit Polis Kamil Gökçe Street in Nailbey Mahallesi. According to the information obtained, the demolition of the 5-story Hacı Hurşit Apartment, which was damaged in earthquakes and coordinated by the Provincial Special Administration, started two days ago. It was revealed that during the demolition, the 5-story Can Apartment next to it had no wall, and the two buildings had been using a common wall for years. It was understood that the wall belonged to the demolished building, and the contractor did not build a wall on the facade of the second building to reduce costs. In the images taken from the outside and inside of the apartments whose walls were damaged after the demolition, it was observed that some of the thin walls were built using cement bags. The Provincial Special Administration stated that they took over the damages of the apartment residents affected by the demolition due to the wall that was not built in time and covered all expenses.
“They put cement paper on the wall” Erkan Demir (22), who lives on the top floor of the Can Apartment where the wall was missing, said, “This is a 5-story building. We are a family of 4 with my mother, father, brother, and me. While my brother and I were sleeping, the demolition took place. We had no idea, we thought there was an earthquake and jumped out of bed. We are grateful that they come and do the demolition, but they should have informed us that there would be a demolition. The wall of the room where my brother and I sleep, the wall of the room where my parents stay, and the wall of the bathroom collapsed. This may be a 40-year-old building. They put cement paper on the wall. The same contractor built the collapsed building and our building, and when they built the buildings, they made only one wall. They built it with normal plaster.”
“The contractor did not use a wall when building the building” Suat Aluçlu, the demolition control chief of the Provincial Special Administration personnel, said, “As the Provincial Special Administration, we have undertaken the demolition of heavily damaged and moderately damaged structures in our city for the safety of the citizens. We did the demolition next to the seen building. However, the contractor did not use a wall when building the building. To prevent our citizens from being victims, we are here again, both as the governorship and the Provincial Special Administration, covering all costs. As we have seen both in the demolition phase and in the solid buildings, contractors have stolen quite a lot of materials from the construction. This creates a great problem for both us and our colleagues who are doing the demolition. The walls were built without being plastered.”
