Programs organized by Talas Municipality continue to provide health information to citizens. Most recently, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Gültekin from the Department of Neurology at Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine explained migraine to the citizens. Talas Mayor Mustafa Yalçın, municipal staff, and citizens attended the program held at the Municipal Council Hall. President Yalçın thanked Gültekin for his speech. In a brief speech, Mayor Yalçın mentioned that they had implemented a program with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Gültekin, the President of Turkey Alzheimer’s Association Kayseri Branch and Faculty Member at ERU Faculty of Medicine Department of Neurology, to inform citizens about common diseases and their diagnosis and treatments. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Gültekin then provided information about migraine headaches. He stated that the aim was to provide correct health information to the citizens. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gültekin noted that such programs continue periodically, mentioning that the first health seminars for citizens were about Alzheimer’s and the second was about brain health. Gültekin, who himself is a migraine patient, emphasized that this condition is very common in society. He mentioned that unfortunately, only a small number of patients receive proper diagnosis and treatment for migraines, which account for 90% of all headaches, are three times more common in women, especially in women of childbearing age, and most commonly occur between the ages of 30-40. Migraine decreases patients’ daily performance. Approximately 16% of the Turkish population has migraines, with 225,000 migraine patients in Kayseri, of which unfortunately 190,000 have not received proper diagnosis and treatment. Gültekin highlighted that there have been revolutionary treatments for migraines in the last 3 years and emphasized that contrary to popular belief, migraines can be treated with very effective medications, some of which are available in Turkey. The program concluded after a question and answer session.
