The meditation device that analyzes emotions without the need for body sensors designed for children by students of Yaşar University Industrial Design Department, Eda Sayın and Berkay Kazak, and the smart pen project that digitizes notes taken, took a step towards commercialization by being granted a national utility model by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office. Yaşar University students, the meditation device that analyzes emotions without the need for body sensors designed for children and the smart pen project that digitizes notes taken, were developed within the scope of the Studio course conducted by Can Güvenir and Assistant Professor Selen Devrim Ülkebaş in the fall semester of the 2021-2022 academic year at the Faculty of Art and Design, Industrial Design Department of Yaşar University.
Providing emotional self-regulation, Eda Sayın’s Personal Meditation Device project for children analyzes emotions without the need for body sensors, recommends breathing and focusing exercises suitable for the person’s current emotional state. The product analyzes radio frequency signals reflected from the body using EQ-Radio technology to detect changes in breathing and heart rhythms and uses an algorithm to determine the person’s emotional state. Additionally, it provides a healthier and more productive sleep with relaxing meditations during sleep and waking processes. Explaining how the project idea emerged, Eda Sayın stated that understanding, recognizing, and developing emotions are valuable efforts for anyone who wants to establish healthy relationships and pursue what they want in life, emphasizing the importance of emotional intelligence in relationships, health, and quality of life.
In Berkay Kazak’s EverPen project, unlike many digital pens, the product digitizes notes taken on any surface without the need for smart paper or other smart writing surfaces. The sensors in the product detect movement and transfer analog notes to the digital environment simultaneously. Another innovation offered by the product is eliminating the need for a proximity sensor unit that requires close positioning of the pen, as stated by Berkay Kazak, who focused on the pen during the project, aiming to facilitate digital note-taking and information backup processes for users who use traditional note-taking methods by incorporating all technological systems into a ballpoint pen.
Can Güvenir, an Instructor at the Industrial Design Department of Yaşar University Faculty of Art and Design, mentioned that the projects developed in the Studio course consist of important examples showcasing students’ creativity and innovation, some of which provide innovative solutions that will fill a significant gap, especially in the health and education fields for children. He emphasized that these projects, along with the support and opportunities provided by Yaşar University to its students, allow young designers to develop not only their academic achievements but also their entrepreneurial spirit. By encouraging students to protect their intellectual property rights and commercialize their projects, the university contributes to the emergence of promising entrepreneurs.
