The ‘Wildflowers’ project initiated by Mersin Metropolitan Municipality 4 years ago to ensure the continued education of talented girls in various sports branches continues. The Wildflowers, who have achieved significant success in the competitions they have participated in, are making steady progress towards becoming successful female athletes. Applications for the selection exams, where girls aged 10-14 are accepted and parental participation is mandatory, will be made in person at the Macit Özcan Sports Facilities Wildflowers Athlete Training Center between May 27 and June 7. For the application, one photo and a copy of the ID card will be sufficient. The evaluations will start with height and weight assessment at the exams to be held on June 8 at Nevin Yanıt Athletics Field, and general performance evaluations measuring physical abilities such as vertical jump, flexibility, speed running, standing long jump, and endurance running will be taken into account.

‘Our girls are both doing sports and continuing their education.’

Emrullah Taşkın, the Head of Youth and Sports Services Department, stated that the Wildflowers project is a project that will set an example for Turkey. Taşkın, expressing that currently 33 girls are both doing sports and continuing their education within the scope of the project, said, ‘Our Wildflowers project has started to bear fruit. They have also started to be very successful. They have won nearly 50 medals in the Turkish championships for 2 years.’ Providing information about the project, Taşkın mentioned that especially girls living in rural areas and talented in sports are discovered with this project and said, ‘We select children who have a talent for sports and need support, meet all their needs at our Wildflowers Athlete Training Center, and provide them with education. In addition to becoming successful athletes, we provide all kinds of support for them to become successful individuals as well. While our children continue their success within the scope of the project, we accept new athletes into our family every year. This year, selections will also be held on June 8. The children who succeed in these selections will join our center next year.’

Taşkın also mentioned the ‘Sports Bus’ projects that go to villages and rural areas, saying, ‘We observe and include in the exams the children who participate in the project in those areas and show talent. If they succeed in these exams, they will receive education at our center.’
