A cave located in the district of Defne in Hatay, resembling horror movies, is home to thousands of bats. The cave, located on a privately owned land belonging to the residents of the region, is waiting to be explored by adventure enthusiasts. The cave, known as “Çan Mağarası” in Harbiye neighborhood of Defne district, is famous among the local people for hosting thousands of bats. One of the many caves in Hatay known for its underground and above-ground riches, Çan Mağarası is approximately 130 meters long and 3 meters high. The cave, where collapses have occurred, is located within the private property of a citizen named Vecih Aşkar. It is advised not to enter the cave without a mask and a flashlight, as the sounds produced by the bats create an environment reminiscent of horror movies.

Tevfik Öztürk, who warns visitors exploring the cave to wear a mask and bring a flashlight, said, “This cave has remained the same for 100 years. This cave used to be around 4 km, but due to collapses, it is now approximately 130 meters. There are holes inside the cave. When you enter from the bottom of the holes, you come out from the top. The inside of the cave is very scary and chilling. Due to the sounds of the bats and the warmth of the cave, it is truly a chilling place. Those who come here should absolutely not enter without a mask, flashlight, and without informing us. Do not enter without a mask. Because we have difficulty breathing. We sweated because it was very hot. It is really difficult to describe but it must be seen. It is a magnificent and fantastic place.

When you enter the cave, wear a flashlight and a mask. Those who want to see can come. It is a very beautiful place.

Vecih Aşkar, stating that the cave is within his titled property, said, “The large cave is normally 2 kilometers, but after about 60 meters, there has been a collapse. There are bats inside the cave. There are bats in the cavity at a height of 12 meters inside. Not millions, but quite a few bats. This cave is located within my titled property. We guide the visitors who come here to see. You should wear a mask. Because it is a closed area, due to the dirt of the bats, the environment’s humidity changes, causing people to experience shortness of breath.”
