Selçuk University (SU) Faculty of Veterinary Medicine’s livestock research and application farm in Konya provides veterinary students with the opportunity to practice in addition to theoretical education. The SU Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Prof. Dr. Hümeyra Özgen Livestock Research and Application Farm stands out as the farm closest to a veterinary faculty established within a university in Turkey. Located within the Alaeddin Keykubat Campus, the farm, which also has Turkey’s largest animal hospital, allows students of Selçuk University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine to learn everything about their profession. The farm includes sheep farming, cattle farming, horse breeding, dog breeding, egg poultry farming, and alternative poultry units. In addition to theoretical education at the veterinary faculty, students have the opportunity to receive practical training with the animals on the farm. With this opportunity, students become ready for the veterinary profession upon graduation from their faculties. While feed is produced for animals in the fields within Selçuk University, the products obtained from the animals are also put up for sale, contributing to both practical training for students and the economy.
“Our students learn everything about the profession with all the training on the farm” Providing information about the farm and the faculty, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kurtuluş Parlak, Deputy Dean of the Department of Surgery at Selçuk University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, said, “Our farm is very advantageous because it is the closest farm to the veterinary faculty. Our farm includes cattle farming, sheep farming, horse, poultry, and dog breeding sections. Our most important feature is that we bring the forage crops we obtain from the allocated fields to our agriculture, and we feed them to our animals. Our students learn everything about the profession with all the training on the farm,” he said.
“These animals are used in the research of our undergraduate students and faculty members” Sedat Arslan, Director of Prof. Dr. Hümeyra Özgen Livestock Research and Application Farm, stated that various animals are present on the farm: currently, there are sheep farming, cattle farming, horse breeding, dog breeding, egg poultry farming, and alternative poultry units. There are 47 cattle, 145 sheep, 3 horses, 22 dogs, as well as partridges and quails in our farm. These animals are used in the research of our undergraduate students and faculty members.
“We are one of the departments where the first partridge and quail projects were carried out in Turkey” Emre Aslan, Assistant Professor in the Department of Zoo Science at Selçuk University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, stated that they mainly work on poultry species. “We have a nice farm. It is very nice for our students to have the opportunity for practice. We have many projects. We are one of the departments where the first partridge and quail projects were carried out in Turkey, which has made a significant contribution to their proliferation. Many of our instructors continue to actively provide projects related to these species.” Students studying at Selçuk University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine mentioned that they are more easily prepared for the profession thanks to the farm. The students expressed that they love taking care of the animals when they come to the farm.
