In Hatay, a mosque with a road passing underneath for vehicles and pedestrians managed to withstand the earthquake without collapsing. The mosque, which defies the years, also attracts attention with its appearance.

During the disaster of the century, many buildings along with mosques were destroyed in Hatay. One of the mosques in Antakya district that managed to survive standing is the Central Mosque located in Narlıca Neighborhood. The remarkable feature of the mosque, whose minaret was damaged in the earthquake, is that a road passes underneath it. The mosque, defying the years, has a road passing underneath approximately 2 meters high and 1 meter 80 centimeters wide, attracting attention with its appearance. The local people can use the road passing under the mosque with their vehicles and on foot to go to their homes.

“A road passing underneath for years”

Cuma Bulut, a resident of Narlıca Neighborhood, mentioned that the restoration of the minaret damaged in the earthquake is ongoing, stating, “I was born and raised here. This is Narlıca Central Mosque. A road has been passing underneath for years. The minaret was damaged due to the earthquake, but the mosque itself did not collapse. The minaret is being restored. Vehicles can pass underneath it.”

“We used to see such structures only in the Black Sea region”

Hatay traveler Kemal Korkmaz noticed the mosque with an interesting appearance while taking a walk, stating, “I visited here yesterday and saw such an interesting structure. Then, I took a photo of the interesting structure. It looks very beautiful and interesting. We used to see such structures only in the Black Sea region. It looks interesting here too, I liked it. It did not suffer damage in the earthquake, only the minaret was slightly damaged.”
