Within the scope of the Disabled Week in Mersin, the event ‘Workshop on Body and Mind Health with Special Needs Children Mothers’ was organized. Mersin Metropolitan Municipality Health Affairs Department coordinated the workshop within the framework of the Disabled Week. In the workshop program, firstly, Dr. Sezin Saygı Ozyurt made a presentation on women’s health. Ozyurt explained the importance of gynecological examination, the frequency of examinations, the importance of HPV screening against cervical cancer, and the frequency of tests. Psychologist Dila Aslan conducted a self-compassion workshop. Following the workshop, which was held in a conversational atmosphere about the need for special needs families to show themselves the understanding and attention they offer to others, Physiotherapist and Yoga Instructor Merve Soydan gave a yoga class.
“Women can sometimes forget themselves in the hustle and bustle of daily life.” Obstetrician and Gynecologist Dr. Sezin Saygı Ozyurt provided information on various issues related to women’s health, stating, “Women can sometimes forget themselves in the hustle and bustle of daily life. We emphasized the importance of regular gynecological check-ups, women’s health, preventing diseases before they occur, and provided information especially about HPV. We also touched on ways to protect against cervical cancer, its vaccine, screenings, and other issues in women’s health.”
“Our special children and their mothers are very precious to us as well.” Psychologist Dila Aslan, who works at the Metropolitan Municipality Autism Family Counseling Center, stated that they organize daily activities for special children and parents during the Disabled Week, saying, “Today, we organized a Body and Mind Health Workshop specifically for the mothers of our special children. We conducted a self-compassion workshop for the mothers. Our special children and their mothers are very precious to us.”
“Many things we experience in daily life manifest through the body.” Physiotherapist and Yoga Instructor Merve Soydan expressed that yoga will provide relaxation for the body, saying, “Many things we experience in daily life manifest through the body. Through some practical practices and readings on the body, we try to help them relax to some extent. We showed them a few simple movements that they can apply in their daily lives without the need to go to a studio. I believe that if they repeat them regularly, they will relax to some extent.”
Mothers were satisfied with the workshops. Berrin Tulumbacı, who attended the workshop, stated that the presentation on women’s health was very beneficial for her, saying, “What was explained here needs to be learned especially by mothers of special needs children.” Ece Bolat, who expressed that she found the answers to many questions in her mind during the event, said, “It was a great seminar. I realized that I had been wrong about the durations of some tests. I thank you.” Deniz Kara, a mother of a special needs individual, stated that they gained awareness about what they could do for themselves in the face of any problem and felt mental and physical relaxation and lightness through the yoga they practiced.
