In the district of Bismil in Diyarbakır, within the framework of the ‘Working and Producing Youth Program’ initiated to support the personal and social development of young people and ensure their employability, the ‘Bismil Employment-Focused Capacity Development Project’ has been implemented by the Ministry of Industry and Technology and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, where 5 textile factories established under the project are producing for world-renowned brands. The enterprises are also facing a shortage of workers. The factories, which are aimed to provide employment for a total of 1,500 people, will make the district one of the important textile production centers in the region. The project not only creates the necessary infrastructure for medium and large-scale ready-to-wear investments but also enables women and young people who would otherwise migrate to big cities to participate in the business life in the district. Textile producer Mehmet Avşar told Ihlas News Agency (IHA) that 5 factories were established on an area of 16,500 square meters, and the foundations were laid in 2022. Avşar stated that currently all 5 producers are operational and each factory is employing 150 people. Avşar mentioned the difficulty in finding qualified personnel, stating that each factory aims to employ 250-300 people. He expressed that the contribution to Bismil has been very positive and they have transitioned from working with an underground mentality to a level where they can work with international brands. Avşar explained the plan to hire unskilled workers and train them to address the labor shortage. He emphasized that all social rights such as minimum wage, insurance, annual leave, and severance pay are provided. The main products produced are t-shirts, sweatshirts, and hoodies. The project was realized with the support of the Ministry of Industry and Technology and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the efforts of Karacadağ Development Agency were crucial in its implementation. A worker named Hülya Fidan (20) shared that she started working there when the project was launched and expressed how it provides economic freedom for women in Bismil. Another worker, Serhat Yalçın (21), mentioned that their insurance is covered without any issues and they prefer working there over going to the western regions due to better utilization of their salary and being with their families.
