Asset Logistics Insurance Manager Ayşe Çiçek Akdülger made statements regarding the importance of supply chains and logistics operations forming the backbone of supply chains, both in the past and today. Akdülger pointed out that as logistics operations diversify and grow in volume, the probabilities of risks inherent in operations also rise, emphasizing the necessity of more effectively managing these risks for the uninterrupted operation of supply chains. Akdülger stated that for supply chains to operate seamlessly, it has become a necessity to manage these risks more effectively. She mentioned that insurance is the most common risk-sharing method known, playing a crucial role in today’s commercial life, and insurance is an indispensable part of logistics operations.
Freight forwarders are considered as the sender to sub-carriers. Logistic service providers’ responsibilities are determined by the contracts they make with the businesses receiving the service. Akdülger explained that in a storage contract, the basic activities such as receiving goods on behalf of the business receiving the service, picking products, shipment, cross-docking, as well as value-added processes like labeling, ironing, are specified. Transport contracts are used to indicate at which stage and on which party the responsibilities related to the transported cargo lie. Freight forwarders are considered as the sender to sub-carriers and bear this responsibility. In a contract made between the logistic service provider and the business receiving the service, if the inability to fulfill responsibilities due to unexpected or unforeseen circumstances beyond the control of the parties is mentioned as a ‘force majeure’, the logistic service provider does not bear any responsibility towards the business receiving the service when such a situation occurs.
Akdülger emphasized that the importance of logistics operations forming the backbone of supply chains is increasing today as it was in the past. She pointed out that as logistics operations diversify and grow in volume, the probabilities of risks inherent in operations also increase. Akdülger stressed that for supply chains to operate seamlessly, it has become a necessity to manage these risks more effectively. Insurance is the most common risk-sharing method known and plays a crucial role in today’s commercial life. Insurance is also an indispensable part of logistics operations. From the perspective of a logistic service provider, I tried to examine the responsibilities and risks associated with each operation and how these risks are covered by insurance policies.
Akdülger also addressed the main risks encountered in logistics processes, such as supply risks originating from manufacturers, production countries, or the product itself, as well as transportation and distribution risks due to the nature, value, and handling of the cargo. She mentioned various risks, including storage risks related to the environment, nature, legislation, the nature and value of the goods, handling and value-added risks due to equipment used, methods applied, or materials used, as well as risks related to employees’ health, errors, omissions, data, and document loss.
Akdülger discussed the insurance of logistics risks, mentioning various types of insurance such as domestic carrier financial liability insurance, international road carrier liability insurance, compulsory financial liability insurance for motor vehicles on highways, optional financial liability insurance, green card insurance, marine insurance, railway transportation insurance, air transportation insurance, hazardous materials compulsory liability insurance, freight forwarder liability insurance, third-party liability insurance, workplace fire insurance, commodity fire insurance, employer financial liability insurance, professional liability insurance, personal accident insurance, special security financial liability insurance, machinery breakdown insurance, electronic equipment insurance, neighborhood financial liability insurance, abuse of security insurance, profit loss insurance, customs professional liability insurance.
Akdülger emphasized the importance of being informed about the goods transported or stored during operational processes, informing customers about existing risks, ensuring the protection of goods, and providing information on insurance policy details. She highlighted the significance of proper packaging of goods, conveying problematic packaging to the customer if any, transporting goods using the correct vehicle and method according to the nature of the goods, ensuring the adequacy of suitable insurance coverage by evaluating risks on a case-by-case basis, maintaining continuous communication between the Insurance Department and operational departments to keep each other updated on changing regulations or operational processes, informing customers likewise, preparing for unforeseen risks or occurrences and ensuring these risks are covered both internally and by insurance companies.
Akdülger mentioned that for logistics service providers, knowing the possibilities related to corporate risk management practices and insurance will diversify the solutions offered to customers, making operations more efficient and uninterrupted. She stated that joint efforts between insurance companies and logistic service providers will lead to a clearer understanding and easier management of risks in supply chain processes.
