The neglect of cemeteries in Arnavutköy, caused by overgrown grass and weed piles, has led to great dissatisfaction among the residents. Arnavutköy Municipality, which is responsible for the maintenance of the cemeteries, repeatedly complained to Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), took action on its own to clean and maintain the cemeteries due to the indifference of IMM. Arnavutköy Municipality responded to the complaints of the citizens regarding cemetery cleaning and maintenance by taking action. They sent multiple complaints to IMM, who is responsible for cemetery maintenance, and in response to the negligence of IMM, Arnavutköy Municipality carried out cleaning and maintenance using their own resources. The Department of Parks and Gardens of Arnavutköy Municipality formally notified IMM about the maintenance, repair, and operation complaints received from the citizens regarding the cemeteries within the district in detail. The letter emphasized that according to Law No. 5216 on Metropolitan Municipalities, all duties, authorities, and responsibilities regarding cemeteries within the boundaries of Istanbul belong to IMM, and it was stated that if the requests are not evaluated, Arnavutköy Municipality will take all necessary measures to eliminate citizen grievances. Taking into account the reaction of the citizens, Arnavutköy Mayor Mustafa Candaroğlu instructed for the maintenance and cleaning of Bogazkoy Cemetery. As a result of intensive work, the teams of the Department of Parks and Gardens of Arnavutköy Municipality cleaned the grass in the cemetery, and general maintenance and organization were carried out. It was also learned that IMM signed a cemetery maintenance contract worth 116 million TL in April. Arnavutköy Mayor Mustafa Candaroğlu stated, ‘Before the upcoming Eid al-Adha, we, as Arnavutköy Municipality, carried out the cleaning and maintenance work that IMM should have done in order to eliminate the grievances of our citizens and ensure that their visits are made in a clean environment.’
