Ancient artifacts defying centuries in museums in Kocaeli are being preserved with special methods to prevent damage during earthquakes. The artifacts fixed with microcrystalline wax do not undergo any chemical reactions and are displayed in an aesthetic manner. Additionally, applications such as form support and twine are used for large-volume artifacts.
Kocaeli Archaeology Museum and Its Exhibits
Kocaeli Archaeology Museum showcases valuable artifacts from the Paleolithic, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods to visitors. In the museum garden, sculptures, sarcophagi, tombstones, and amphorae found in excavations in the city are exhibited.
Serkan Gedük, the Director of Kocaeli Museum, mentions that the efforts to protect historical artifacts against earthquakes are carried out under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage Museums. He emphasizes that the primary goal of the measures taken to prevent artifacts from being damaged in earthquakes and disasters is to minimize loss of life and property.
Direcetor Gedük states that meticulous methods such as microcrystalline wax application, form support, and twine are carefully implemented. Thanks to these methods, damage to the artifacts during earthquakes is prevented, and an opportunity for aesthetic display is provided.
Gedük points out that these protection efforts in Kocaeli Museums are carried out by experts and similar practices are being implemented in many museums across Turkey. He mentions that the methods developed for the preservation of artifacts are constantly reviewed and updated by experts.
