Female tram drivers working in the rail systems of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality are carrying out their jobs with great dedication. Unfazed by any obstacles, these women tram drivers who have successfully completed all the challenging trainings are also heroes to their children. Children who are proud of their mothers show great interest in their profession.

View of Female Tram Drivers’ Families Towards the Profession

Out of 282 tram drivers working at Izmir Metro Inc. and Izmir Tramway under Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, 33 are women. They have achieved their dream profession by going through challenging trainings. While women pursue this profession, they not only bring great pride and happiness to themselves but also to their children.

  • Gülşah Yurttaş has been working at Izmir Tramway for 10 years. Her son Çağan shows great interest in his mother’s profession and feels proud.
  • Merve İyigün is one of the women who became a tram driver after challenging trainings. Her son Osman Emre increases his mother’s interest in trains.
  • Burcu Duman has been working as a tram driver at Metro for 7 years. Her son Egemen admires his mother’s profession and wants to drive trains.

Women who carry out their work with great dedication experience the pride of being heroes to their children. Their families are also happy about the success of these women and provide unwavering support.

Gülşah Yurttaş: “My son now loves my job very much. He proudly tells his friends, ‘My mom drives the tram.’ This makes my son happy.”

Merve İyigün: “My son is curious about how the tram is operated. When he goes to school, he talks about my job. This is a very beautiful and prideful feeling.”

Burcu Duman: “My son used to get off at every station, wave at me, and then get back on. He is very enthusiastic about this job. He says, ‘I will also drive the train. Mommy, please let me, I want to drive the train.'”

Despite the challenging trainings and working conditions, female tram drivers enjoy their profession with great pleasure. The presence of women in this field in society not only inspires young girls and children but also sheds light on the shattered stereotypes of women’s success in male-dominated professions.

Burcu Duman: “When I see elderly and young children at the stations, I extend my waiting time a bit. Especially when I see someone with a baby stroller, I do this. I can’t bear the thought of the child waiting at the station in cold or very hot weather.”
