Adana’s traditional clothing, ‘şalvar’, was granted a ‘geographical indication certificate’ by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office. A celebration accompanied by drum and zurna was held for the registered şalvar.

Traditional Clothing: Adana Şalvarı

Şalvar, which was once an indispensable traditional clothing in Adana, is now on the verge of being forgotten due to the influence of the modern age. However, producers are making efforts to keep this valuable attire alive. While there used to be numerous şalvar shops in the historic Büyüksaat Bazaar, today only a few of them are in operation. Especially people living in rural areas still prefer the Adana şalvar, traditionally in black color.

Adana Şalvarı Granted Geographical Indication Certificate

In 2021, the Yüreğir Chamber of Agriculture applied to the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office for the Adana şalvar, which was at risk of being forgotten. As a result, the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office granted a ‘geographical indication certificate’ for the Adana şalvar. With this important document, the Adana şalvar has been passed down to future generations while preserving its regional identity.

Mehmet Akın Doğan, the President of the Yüreğir Chamber of Agriculture, and the board members visited Adana Governor Yavuz Selim Köşger wearing şalvar. The celebrations that followed with drum and zurna accompaniment were colorful and lively.

Doğan emphasized the characteristics of the Adana şalvar, stating, ‘Adana şalvar is different from other regional şalvars in terms of its cut, sewing, and comfort. We will continue our efforts to promote and preserve this valuable clothing.’
