Kağıthane Municipality Urban Transformation Works
Kağıthane Municipality continues its efforts to make the district modern and earthquake-resistant. Within this scope, nearly a thousand buildings in the district have been renewed through urban transformation in five years. Urban transformation works, which can be considered exemplary in Turkey, are ongoing in Kağıthane, one of the most central districts of Istanbul. During this period, 40 thousand people in the district started living in safe and modern houses.
Measures Taken Against Earthquakes
In addition to urban transformation, additional measures are taken for a possible earthquake. The number of disaster gathering areas in the district has been increased from 99 to 175. Parking lots and people’s gardens have been built for gathering and sheltering after a disaster. A 110 km fiber optic cabling was installed for a fast and uninterrupted news network technology. Kağıthane Disaster and Emergency Management Center was established. Regular trainings are provided in schools to raise awareness about disasters.
Kağıthane Mayor Mevlüt Öztekin said, ‘Our goal is earthquake-resistant, modern, and aesthetic urban transformation. While doing this, we have created an integrated planning with nature. In five years, we have planted 60 thousand trees in Kağıthane, gained 3 new squares, built 10 new parks, renovated all our parks, implemented the Green Valley Bike and Walking Path project, opened People’s Gardens, creating a city intertwined with greenery and offering our citizens new social areas.’ Mayor Öztekin stated that the works will continue uninterruptedly in the new period.
