The relationship between Turkey and the European Union (EU) was discussed at the panel titled “Turkey-EU Relations from Past to Present” organized at Istanbul Arel University. It was emphasized in the panel that the Customs Union Agreement with the EU needs to be updated, and it was stated that especially visa and migration issues have a negative impact on the relations with the EU.

Important figures such as Bülent Akarcalı, the Minister of State in the 49th Term of the Republic of Turkey, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Çiğdem Nas, the Secretary General of the Economic Development Foundation, discussed Turkey’s EU membership process and the problems in the relations. Akarcalı addressed the roots of the difficulties in relations with the EU and Turkey’s EU membership process.
Issues in the Relations and Solution Proposals
Akarcalı emphasized the necessity of updating the Customs Union Agreement, in addition to the shortcomings experienced during Turkey’s full membership application process to the EU. Furthermore, he pointed out that issues such as visa, migration, and others negatively affect the relations. Çiğdem Nas expressed that in order to advance Turkey-EU relations, focus should be placed on current issues.
