Support Event for Palestine: ‘Marching for Humanity’

As part of the event ‘Marching for Humanity’ organized by OMU Student Communities to support the Palestinian people, students and teachers who gathered at the OMU Campus Mosque after Friday prayers marched to the OMU Life Center where the Palestinian resistance tents are located, accompanied by takbirs.

Rector Ünal’s Call for Support to Palestine

OMU Rector Yavuz Ünal emphasized in his speech at the event that silence should not be maintained against the oppression in Palestine, stating, ‘What is happening in Gaza is not only a test for the people of Gaza, but also for us. We are weak, we have been weak. However, it is a fact, a voice, a stance that the sound we will give from here will strengthen them, showing that there is still hope for Muslims in the future of the world.’

Hamas’ Struggle and Comparison to the War of Independence

Rector Ünal likened Hamas’ struggle to the War of Independence, saying, ‘Whatever Hamas is, Misak-ı Milli was that, Kuva-yı Milliye was that. Whatever Hamas is, the struggle in Palestine is, the War of Independence was that. Therefore, as Ondokuz Mayıs University, we stood where we stood from the beginning, we are still in the same place.’

‘Do not lose this resistance, this stance. This stance must be sustained against protests, boycotts against products. It is necessary to declare that everyone, from our leader who understands them best, to the lowest citizen, has their hearts in Gaza, in Palestine, and that this struggle will continue until it results in a free, independent Palestine state that gives humanity a lesson to the world.’

Expansion of Reactions and Stance Against Zionist Israel

Rector Ünal stated that the reactions should not only be directed at Israel but at all powers supporting it, saying, ‘The fact that this movement is defined as intifada especially in the West has actually increased our hope. The reaction here should be perceived not only as against Zionist Israel. Everything that contributes to the power of Zionist Israel should be restricted.’

  • The event ended after the participants chanted slogans for a while.
