Emotional Control and Childhood

Prof. Dr. H. Nermin Çelen stated that emotional control is learned from childhood through family and peers. Negative behaviors such as violence within the family can negatively affect a child’s emotional regulation.

Emotional Control in Adolescence

Prof. Dr. Çelen expressed that emotions are more intense during adolescence and controlling emotions is dependent on brain development. Lack of emotional control can lead to different problems in adolescence.

Freeze Response and Violence

Negative circumstances and weak emotional control can trigger the freeze response and feelings of anger. Prof. Dr. Çelen noted that internal violence can also be externalized and that violence can affect everyone regardless of gender.

Emotional control is related to emotional intelligence. Prof. Dr. Çelen emphasized the importance of special programs and professional help in increasing emotional intelligence.
