In order to increase earthquake awareness in Muş and to inform the citizens about the precautions to be taken during an earthquake, citizens experienced the Kahramanmaraş earthquake firsthand in the earthquake simulation truck brought to the city. Participants in the earthquake simulation truck brought to the garden of Vangölü Electricity Distribution Company (VEDAŞ) by the Muş Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate experienced the Kahramanmaraş earthquake firsthand. Inside the truck, experts from AFAD demonstrated practically what should be done before, during, and after an earthquake, and what the correct behavior patterns are. Participants who experienced the 7.8 magnitude Kahramanmaraş and Marmara earthquakes with different durations learned to protect themselves by drop-cover-hold method.

Simulations Playing an Effective Role in Increasing Earthquake Awareness

VEDAŞ Occupational Safety Specialist Mehmet Salih Timur, emphasizing the important role of such activities in increasing earthquake awareness, stated that acting correctly and consciously during an earthquake would minimize casualties and material damages, saying, “The purpose of this application is to provide participants with an earthquake experience. There are 4 earthquake simulation trucks belonging to AFAD nationwide. Upon the request of VEDAŞ Provincial Directorate, VEDAŞ Provincial Directorate employees, their families, and citizens benefited from the earthquake simulation truck sent by AFAD from Ankara. Today, a total of 100 of our staff participated. Around 50-60 citizens participated. Such applications have a great impact on the public. Experiencing something is always like starting one step ahead. As VEDAŞ Provincial Directorate, we provide earthquake, fire, avalanche disaster trainings twice a year within the scope of emergency drills.”
