Woman Captain Pilot’s Intervention: Prevented Disaster at Istanbul Airport
The quick and successful intervention of the female captain pilot prevented a possible disaster at Istanbul Airport. Details in our news.
Intervention of Female Captain Pilot Robin Kay Carpenter
It was revealed that the pilot who landed the cargo plane of Fedex Airlines on the fuselage at Istanbul Airport when the front landing gear did not open was the female captain pilot Robin Kay Carpenter. Robin Kay Carpenter’s experience and composure prevented a possible disaster.
During the Paris-Istanbul flight operated by Fedex Airlines, as the cargo plane started to descend for landing at Istanbul Airport, female captain pilot, US citizen Robin Kay Carpenter, received a warning that the front landing gear did not open. The female pilot contacted the airport air traffic control center to report the situation. Responsible captain pilot Robin Kay Carpenter made two passes over the runway for the tower to check the front landing gear. Those moments were reflected in the tower-pilot conversations.
After the check, the plane landed on the fuselage at 08:17 yesterday, skidding for 371 meters before stopping. The two US citizen pilots on the plane survived without any injuries. Sparks caused by friction were extinguished in a short time of 12 seconds as a result of the immediate intervention of Istanbul Airport Operator IGA and State Airports Authority (DHMI) ARFF teams. Both the responsible female captain pilot Robin Kay Carpenter and the efforts of the ARFF teams at the time of the incident prevented a major disaster.
Opening of Traffic After the Removal of the Plane
The cargo plane, which landed on the fuselage and skidded to a stop for 371 meters in the middle of the runway, was removed from its location after approximately 17 hours of work by IGA and DHMI ARFF teams. While the plane was towed to a safe area for technical inspection, the runway was reopened for flights in the late hours of the night.
