Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Ibrahim Yumaklı stated that Turkey’s Beekeeping Map, which includes the country’s beekeeping-related information, has been updated with the 2023 data, mentioning that ‘Our Turkey Beekeeping Map has been updated with our new geographical indication honey and breeding queen bee producing provinces’.

The Importance of Beekeeping in Turkey

Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Ibrahim Yumaklı emphasized that Turkey, which has 75% of the world’s honey plant flora due to its geographical location and biodiversity, ranks second in honey production worldwide, highlighting that 90% of pine honey production in the world also takes place in Turkey.

Efforts in Beekeeping

Reminding that numerous projects have been implemented in the last 22 years to develop beekeeping and increase honey production, Yumaklı highlighted that the Turkey Beekeeping Map internet site provided by the Livestock General Directorate affiliated with the Ministry is an important digital guide for producers.

Minister Yumaklı pointed out that the Turkey Beekeeping Map internet site, which can also be accessed through the ‘TarımCebimde’ mobile application, contains a lot of data and statistical information about beekeeping, stating that ‘Our map prepared for the whole country and provinces includes information such as the number of producers, number of hives, honey production, and honey yield per hive indicated with a color scale’.

Beekeeping Situation According to 2023 Data

Yumaklı, who reported that the Turkey Beekeeping Map, which is occasionally updated with new information, has been updated with the 2023 data, provided the following information: ‘According to the 2023 TURKSTAT data, our country, which has 9.2 million beehives, has an annual honey production of 115 thousand tons, and the average yield per hive is at the level of 12.5 kilograms.’

Our honey production, which was 74 thousand tons in 2002, increased by 54% to 115 thousand tons in 2023 as a result of the efforts of our Ministry, while our bee colony count, which was 4.1 million, increased by 122% to 9.2 million. Provinces with the highest number of hives include Muğla, Ordu, Adana, Mersin, and Izmir. Ordu achieves the highest yield per hive, followed by Adana, Çanakkale, Sivas, and Kars.

The highest honey production is carried out in Ordu, Adana, Muğla, Sivas, and Izmir. Muğla, Sivas, Antalya, Izmir, and Ordu stand out as provinces with the highest number of beekeeping enterprises.’
