During the Traffic Week event held in Diyarbakır, drivers, students, and families were informed. Provincial Police Chief Fatih Kaya stated, ‘We have achieved a 70% decrease in fatal traffic accidents from last year to this year in our province.’

Increased Awareness through Education and Inspections

Within the scope of Traffic Week with the slogan ‘Life Cannot Be Competed With’ on Fırat Boulevard in the central Kayapınar district, Provincial Police Chief Fatih Kaya, Traffic Branch Director İlker Köksoy, and traffic police conducted inspections to inform drivers, students, and families. Chief of Police Kaya pointed out that the first week of May is celebrated as Traffic Week worldwide and said, ‘2.1% of all deaths worldwide occur in traffic accidents. This ranks traffic accidents 11th among causes of death. Each year, 20-25 million people worldwide suffer disabilities due to traffic accidents. In developed countries, traffic accidents can be prevented to a certain extent through infrastructure. The incorporation of technological advancements in vehicles and roads also has a significant impact. But in my opinion, the most crucial factor is increasing inspections.’

  • Chief Kaya also mentioned a 70% decrease in fatal traffic accidents in Diyarbakır compared to the previous year, emphasizing, ‘This decrease is directly related to increasing our inspections proportionally. We prioritize not only inspections with traffic police but also technological inspections. As part of these technological inspections, we are implementing a project related to Diyarbakır. We plan to install 8 electronic monitoring systems in our province by improving the existing camera systems, increasing road signs, and installing new software. We are nearing the completion of our efforts to establish 8 speed tunnels in Diyarbakır, with 5 on intercity roads and 3 within the city. Hopefully, we will have these speed tunnels in service very soon, possibly before the upcoming Eid al-Adha holiday. This will help bring more discipline to traffic.’

The program concluded with taking photos with students.
