Associate Professor Ayşe Su Kocayörük from the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Science and Literature at Istanbul Arel University, states that 20-30% of children in Turkey are exposed to toxic parenting. She emphasizes that this situation can lead to mental problems such as depression. According to Kocayörük, toxic parenting means sometimes crossing boundaries and restricting children’s freedoms, even if parents love their children as much as they want.

Toxic Parenting Behaviors and Effects

According to Associate Professor Kocayörük, behaviors such as showing contemptuous, humiliating attitudes, giving constant critical feedback, and exerting constant pressure on children can be cited as examples of toxic parenting. These types of parents tend to see their children as extensions of themselves rather than recognizing their children’s rights to be individuals. This situation can lead children to repeat similar patterns in their relationships in their later lives.

Treatment and Recommendations

Emphasizing the important role of therapists in cases of toxic parenting, Kocayörük points out the importance of individuals being aware of their own behaviors. She mentions that families should establish open communication, learn to listen to their children, and try to understand their needs. Additionally, she expresses that children growing up in toxic families can develop healthy attachment relationships by seeking external support. She also suggests that parents should review their own behaviors, accept their children as they are, and set boundaries.
