Factors Affecting Forest Fires in Mersin

Governor of Mersin, Ali Hamza Pehlivan, stated that the fact that 57% of the vegetation in Mersin, where 53% is covered with forests, is composed of Turkish red pine increases the sensitivity to fires to high levels. The Forest Fire Fighting Commission Meeting was held at the Forest Regional Directorate under the chairmanship of Governor Pehlivan. Pehlivan emphasized the importance of rapid and effective intervention in forest fires during the meeting.
Technological Solutions Used in Fire Fighting
Pehlivan expressed that surveillance is carried out using unmanned aerial vehicles in forested areas and mentioned that in addition to the old analog radio system, a digital radio system has been established for communication services. Furthermore, he disclosed that 305 vehicles are monitored 24 hours a day with the installed vehicle tracking system.
Reforestation Efforts in the Last 3 Years
Governor Pehlivan also touched upon the reforestation efforts carried out in the province over the last 3 years during the meeting. He stated that in our province, 3,876 hectares were afforested in 2021, 7,646 hectares in 2022, and 4,035 hectares in 2023, indicating an increase in seedling production.

Furthermore, Governor Pehlivan visited the new service building of the Forest Regional Directorate in the Toroslar district. Having received information from the Forest Regional Director Yalçın about the activities carried out, Pehlivan addressed the units through the radio system connected to the Fire Management and Coordination Center, where 9 forest enterprises are affiliated.
