Scandal: Criminal Record Office Prevented Muhtarship

Interesting developments took place in the muhtar election held on March 31 in Yaylaönü Neighborhood of Trabzon’s Çaykara district.

Obstacle for the Winning Candidate

Hasan Asan, who won the election, was astonished to learn that he could not become a muhtar due to his criminal record registration upon the complaint of the former muhtar Yakup Toprak.

Mutual Complaint and Outcome

After learning that Hasan Asan also had a similar criminal record, the former muhtar reported the situation to the District Election Board. The Board decided that neither of the two candidates were eligible to become a muhtar.

Decision for a New Election

As a result of both muhtar candidates being ineligible, Çaykara District Election Board decided to hold a new muhtar election on June 2, 2024.

“We had not complained about him before, but he complained about us”
Hasan Asan stated in his remarks about the incident, “I built a hotel in Uzungöl in 2017. The previous action was not an obstacle, the law changed in 2019…”

The former muhtar Yakup Toprak also commented on the incident, “My opponent received more votes than me. Due to the crime he committed legally, he could not serve as a muhtar…”
