Students Cleaned Breeding Areas

In Alata Beach in the district of Erdemli in Mersin, students from Arpaçbahsiş Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School took action to clean the breeding areas of sea turtles. Mersin, which is one of the most important breeding centers in the world for loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) and green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas), hosts thousands of turtles every year.

Students Cleaned for Sensitive Animals

Under the guidance of teachers, students conducted a beach cleaning activity by collecting wood pieces and plastic waste on the shore to clean the egg-laying areas of sea turtles. Teacher Serdar Kuş emphasized that loggerhead turtles are sensitive animals and that waste could hinder them.

Contribution of Students is Important

Senior high school student Ayşenur Başkurt highlighted the importance of the students’ cleaning work by emphasizing that sea turtles ensure the continuity of future generations by laying their eggs in this region. Another student, Melih Buğra Özçelik, stated that Alata Beach is a critical area for sea turtles and that waste puts these animals in a difficult situation.
