Medical Oncologist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Özveren stated that obesity and alcohol are causing an increase in the rates of colorectal cancer among young adults. According to the results of an important study conducted in Europe, it was revealed that excessive weight and alcohol consumption increase the risk of colorectal cancer.

Research Results and Key Findings

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Özveren, Medical Oncology Specialist at Acıbadem City Oncology Center, shared that a study published in the Annals of Oncology journal predicted the cancer mortality rates in European Union countries and the United Kingdom for the year 2024. The study indicated an increase in the frequency of colorectal cancer among young adults, with excessive weight and obesity being significant contributing factors to this rise.

  • Obesity and excessive weight increase the mortality rates from colorectal cancer in individuals aged 25-49.
  • An increase in alcohol consumption and a decrease in physical activity also elevate the risk of colorectal cancer.
  • In the UK, it is expected that by 2024, the colorectal cancer mortality rates among young people will increase by approximately 26% in men and around 39% in women.
  • Early-onset colorectal cancer can be more aggressive compared to cancer diagnosed in the elderly, leading to lower survival rates.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özveren mentioned that the author of the study, Prof. La Vecchia, explained the contributing factors to the increase in colorectal cancer rates among young people. These factors include excessive weight, obesity, high blood sugar levels, diabetes, and excessive alcohol consumption. The study suggests expanding colorectal cancer screenings to younger ages starting from the age of 45.
