Meeting Between the Republican People’s Party (CHP) and DEM Party

The CHP Chairman, Özgür Özel, met with the Co-Chairpersons of the DEM Party, Tülay Hatimoğulları Oruç and Tuncer Bakırhan, at the party headquarters. The meeting was attended by CHP General Secretary Selin Sayek Böke and Deputy Chairman Gamze Taşcıer. A joint press statement was made after the meeting.

The Importance of Democracy and Dialogue

CHP Chairman Özgür Özel stated that the meeting was an important step for Turkish democracy. Emphasizing the critical importance of dialogue among politicians for democracy, Özel pointed out the significance of consensus and discussion culture. Özel expressed that communication and cooperation among political parties are vital for democracy.

Özgür Özel: “Periods where politicians do not shake hands have been a disaster for democracy. Strengthening the dialogue among politicians is a critical step for our democracy in the current process.”

Özel mentioned that he conveyed the prominent issues discussed with President Erdoğan and stated that they will closely monitor the developments in the upcoming period.

Proposal for Ministry of Earthquakes

The CHP Chairman emphasized the importance of establishing a Ministry of Earthquakes, stating that Turkey’s existential problem is earthquakes. Pointing out that a major disaster like the Istanbul earthquake could have a negative impact on the country’s economy and society, Özel called for inter-party cooperation on earthquake issues.

Özgür Özel: “One of Turkey’s biggest existential problems is the unpreparedness for the Istanbul earthquake. Therefore, establishing a Ministry of Earthquakes and taking necessary precautions are of vital importance. The earthquake issue needs to be addressed in a non-partisan manner.”

Özel mentioned that he provided recommendations to President Erdoğan regarding the steps to be taken on earthquake issues and expressed their commitment to follow up on the matter.
