In the district of Defne in Hatay, an education center established to revive traditional silk production and provide employment for women preserves an important cultural heritage.

Silk Cocoon Production Process

At the education center, the 45-day production process of silk cocoons is meticulously monitored. Silk worms, awakening in April, start producing cocoons by feeding on mulberry leaves for about 30 days.

Production on Traditional Looms

The silks processed on handlooms are transformed into products such as shawls and scarves and exhibited. Each product is prepared with hand labor and care, and offered to customers at affordable prices.

“A Nearly Forgotten Profession”

The founder of the education center, Fulya Kadıoğlu, mentions that they aim to revive the nearly forgotten silk production by providing employment opportunities for women. Kadıoğlu, providing detailed information on the life cycle and care of silk worms, explains the challenges and intricacies encountered in this field.
