Heavy Rainfall and Hail Hit Elazığ

Heavy rainfall and hail in Elazığ caused adverse effects in the city. The downpour that started after the warning from the 13th Region Directorate of Meteorology later turned into hail. The sudden and severe hail that hit the city center after the effective rain brought life to a standstill in many areas.

Underpass Closed to Traffic

Traffic flow in the underpass on Atatürk Boulevard was halted due to water accumulation. Controlled traffic was provided under the guidance of the Traffic Department of the Provincial Security Directorate, causing distress for drivers on the road. Streets and avenues were flooded after the downpour, leaving citizens in difficult situations.

In a statement by the 13th Region Directorate of Meteorology, it was mentioned, “On Thursday, May 2, 2024, in the morning around Elazığ, thunderstorms with showers are expected to intensify from noon onwards, becoming intermittent and locally strong. Precautions should be taken against possible risks such as flash floods, waterlogging, lightning, landslides, disruptions in transportation, localized hail, and strong winds.”

Ömür Alkan, one of the citizens caught in the downpour with his friends, said, “Actually, the Meteorology had warned. Yesterday evening, the news mentioned expected rainfall in the eastern region. I would say I took my precautions accordingly, but as you can see, we got pretty soaked. At the moment, we are trying to get to work in difficult conditions,” he stated.
