Orthodontist Dr. Res. Asst. Merve Kurt Bıyıklıoğlu from Istanbul Gelişim University (IGU) Dental Hospital shared information about transparent aligners, which are often preferred by those who want aligned teeth and a healthy smile but are reluctant to use braces. She stated that transparent aligner treatment aims to gradually correct the teeth using custom-made, removable aligners that are planned specifically for the individual.

Suitable for Children As Well

Dr. Bıyıklıoğlu emphasized that transparent aligners are so thin that they are almost invisible, and mentioned that children can also comfortably use this treatment method. Transparent aligners can straighten teeth by applying force through attachments added to the tooth surfaces. It was also mentioned that the adjustment period for the aligners is short and they need to be worn for an average of 22 hours per day.

Consistency for Tooth Movement

Transparent aligners must be worn regularly for teeth to move. Except during meals and brushing, the aligners should be worn in the mouth for an average of 22 hours a day. To prevent the teeth from reverting to their original position after treatment, as in wire braces, the teeth are fixed with a thin wire from behind.

  • Transparent aligners can be used in both children and adults if the supporting dental tissues are healthy.
  • They are preferred for goals such as correcting tooth misalignment, closing gaps between teeth, and planning smile aesthetics.
  • Aligners provide convenience for tooth brushing and cleaning.

Compared to traditional wire braces, transparent aligner treatments may require more patient cooperation.

  • After the adjustment period, aligners do not cause speech issues.
  • Among the advantages of aligners are not requiring restrictions on eating and drinking, digital treatment simulation, and easy removal and placement.

Oral Hygiene and Check-ups

Aligners can be removed for cleaning the teeth and the aligners themselves. Therefore, maintaining oral hygiene is not a problem. During check-ups, the fit of the aligners in the mouth, tooth positions, and overall progress are evaluated.
