Highland Journey Started in Niksar

With the arrival of spring in the Niksar district of Tokat, the excitement of the migration of sheep flocks to the highlands has begun. Herders have embarked on a challenging journey towards high-altitude plateaus with their sheep. At the end of this journey, herders will stay in the highlands with their flocks for approximately 4 to 5 months.

Small Livestock Breeders Head to the Highlands

Those engaged in small livestock farming in Niksar have started their journey towards the highlands depending on the weather conditions in April. As in every year, breeders coming from the town center and villages have headed to the highlands with their animals. Especially those who take their animals to graze in the highlands obtain dairy products to consume during the winter months, meeting their animals’ need for grass.

Breeders of small livestock preparing for animal husbandry and sacrificial animal preparation were captured passing through the streets and avenues of the town in the evening accompanied by shepherds and guard dogs. This traditional highland journey represents an important period for both animal care and the lifestyle of breeders.
