  • First Turkish astronaut Gezeravcı’s striking statement: “There are many space vehicles causing debris.”

Turkey’s first astronaut, Alper Gezeravcı, made a speech during his meeting with young people in Edirne, stating, “There are space vehicles orbiting Earth in an uncontrolled manner that contribute to the space debris. There is a study being conducted within the United Nations regarding this. After this, countries will no longer be able to send spacecraft and satellites into orbit in an uncontrolled manner or as they wish.”

Alper Gezeravcı, who made history as Turkey’s first astronaut, met with students at an event held in Edirne. Gezeravcı shared his experiences of spending 14 days in space with the students. He also answered the questions that students were curious about, explaining how they ate, slept, exercised, and conducted scientific research in space. The students, filling the room to capacity, listened with great interest to Gezeravcı’s explanations.

Gezeravcı also advised the students regarding space, emphasizing that space is a place that can be reached through hard work and determination. He mentioned that space vehicles and satellites launched from Earth are now orbiting around Earth in an uncontrolled manner, and countries will no longer be able to send satellites into space as they wish.

“I had the opportunity to observe the colors of the Earth very beautifully.”

Providing information about space travel to the youth, Gezeravcı said, “I saw lightning simultaneously chaining in many points that you cannot see on the Earth’s surface, and this greatly impressed me. I didn’t have any problems with my eyes or vision in space. I had the opportunity to observe the colors of the Earth very beautifully. There was something even more beautiful, the colors of the Moon. While on Earth, we have a beautiful atmospheric layer that can filter out foreign materials that could potentially be directed towards us and filter out beneficial solar rays. This atmosphere alters the light as it filters these rays. The image of the Moon we see on Earth is much clearer and crystal-like compared to what we see on the space station. I had the chance to capture this through photography. Astronauts can experience some muscle loss. I didn’t experience muscle loss because I exercised there.”

“There are many space vehicles turning into space debris.”

Gezeravcı stated, “No one foresaw that space could become such a landfill. No one anticipated that the progress and developments would make so much progress in such a short time. So far, there has been no obligation to bring back satellites sent into space to Earth, and due to advancing technology, many space vehicles are turning into space debris as a new spacecraft or satellite is launched into space every day.”

“A study is being conducted within the United Nations.”
